When latinos get together it's usually around a table of food, with lots of laughter, memories, jokes, and sometimes happy tears! When the main course is gone and you linger at the table talking and laughing and the pan dulce (sweet bread) and Nescafé Clasico is brought out it's called Sobremesa! It's actually my favorite part of the night. You know no one is going anywhere and no one is keeping track of the time , or looking at their phones. Everyone is so immersed in the conversation, which is rare these days!
My high school experience probably wasn't your average high school experience, but it's where I hold my fondest memories with people I have the deepest connections with. My graduating class was about 98 people, and I think that's being generous. In Alief, the concept of "early college" was beginning with myself and about 100 other students. Somehow I got accepted & managed to graduate, but with a class size so small everyone knew everyone. We got to know each other on different levels, we knew everybody's family and when they were going through a tough time. We became a family! I thought I had lost that connection with them, because of my year of training in the military. When I came back I thought I was going to be able to pick back up where I left off, but a lot can happen in a person's life in just a year. Some of my closest friends were away at college, and attempts after failed attempt to rekindle that friendship flame was eventually put to the side.

One day, out of the blue, I texted my friend to see if she wanted to go to karaoke night and to my surprise she said yes! This was the first official time Jeff & I had gone out after Camila was born and needless to say we had the craziest night. Like I'm talking having to call up some guy friends to get Jeff back home kind of night. One thing led to another and a group chat was made. I didn't know what to do to get everyone back together just to catch up because it's been almost 3 years since all of us were together. With the promise of some Posole, pan dulce, & some Nescafé cafesito everyone agreed.
The night was full of good food, laughs, & memories! I couldn't have asked for a better group of friends. We come from all walks of life, have had our own struggles, but when we come together it's like all the problems of the world just melt away!
